Life Coaching and Business Coaching.

A brief history of Life Coaching and Business Coaching and how it evolved.

In Ireland Life Coaching and Business Coaching is developing expectances and credibility at a fast pace. In other parts of Europe and the world Life Coaching and Business Coaching is well established. This is for a good reason. Life Coaching and Business Coaching gets results. It began increasing in reputation as an approach and profession in the mid-1970’s. A number of books appeared around that time that started people looking at coaching One in particular stood out. It was Timothy Gallwey’s “The Inner Game of Tennis”. The author was a former tennis champion. His book gave the world a new and radical way to help people learn to play tennis. Instead of constantly giving orders or even suggestions, like other coaches mostly did, he based his idea on the belief that people had an innate ability in their bodies to learn and to execute actions. He was focused on enabling people to learn through their own experiences on the court. He transformed the coach’s role into one of asking questions. These questions were meant to help players to increase their awareness of how they played. This awareness then led them making their own adjustments accordingly. What followed was an explosion in interest in this concept as business experts and person development trainers began to see the possibilities. Of course this is in no way a true history of Life Coaching and Business Coaching as we know it and there were many others too who play there part in it’s development.

Life Coaches and Business Coaches in Ireland can trace the foundation of their profession to those concepts so well captured in “The Inner Game Tennis”  It is easy make the statement  that “the client has all the answers” and yet it is such an importance and powerful statement. As coaches we believe and trust in the fact that each of our clients has the innate ability to learn what they need to learn, in order to reach and define their goals. I know that to some people it all sounds too easy and it often is when you let yourself finally see it.

There any many reasons why we may seek coaching. The fact is we can from time to time get to close to the trees of our life to be able to see the forest we are in. So why turn to a Life Coach? Well a Life Coach is trained to park his or her own stuff and to always put the interest of their client first without making judgment. It is fantastic to know you have someone you can trust who has nothing to gain or lose personally from the relationship unlike say friends or relations. Someone who will always tell you the truth about what they hear you saying and see you doing and who will not make assumptions.

In Business Coaching as in Life Coaching it is your agenda that matters, even if the business itself has an issue on the table. It’s still always about how you are going to react to it. No matter what issue or goal is, it is always about how it’s going to react to it. Just as in tennis. How you are going to adjust your game to maximise your performance to get the result that is best for you.
